چکیده

The surrogate data methodology is used to test a given time series for membership of specific classes of dynamical systems. Currently, there are three algorithms that are widely applied in the literature. The most general of these tests the hypothesis of nonlinearly scaled linearly filtered noise. However, these tests and the many extensions of them that have been suggested are inappropriate for data exhibiting strong cyclic components. For such data it is more natural to ask if there exist any long term (of period longer than the data cycle length) determinism. In this paper we discuss existing techniques that attempt to address this hypothesis and introduce a new approach. This new approach generates surrogates that are constrained (i.e., they look like the data) and for cyclic time series tests the null hypothesis of a periodic orbit with uncorrelated noise. We examine various alternative implementations of this algorithm, applying it to a variety of known test systems and experimental time series with unknown dynamics. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. A Surrogate Test for Inter-cycle Determinism in Oscillatory Time Series Data

| Surrogate data techniques provide a statistical test for membership of certain classes of dynamical systems. Standard surrogate data techniques do not work well when applied to data that exhibits a strong periodic trend. In this paper we propose a new surrogate method that is able to mimic cyclic behaviour in time series and may be employed to test the null hypothesis of a periodic orbit with...

Cyclic Behavior of Beams Based on the Chaboche Unified Viscoplastic Model

In this paper, ratcheting behavior of beams subjected to mechanical cyclic loads at elevated temperature, using the rate dependent Chaboche unified viscoplastic model with combined kinematic and isotropic hardening theory of plasticity, is investigated. A precise and general numerical scheme, using the incremental method of solution, is developed to obtain the cyclic inelastic creep and plastic...

Assessment of Trend and Seasonality in Road Accident Data: An Iranian Case Study

Background Road traffic accidents and their related deaths have become a major concern, particularly in developing countries. Iran has adopted a series of policies and interventions to control the high number of accidents occurring over the past few years. In this study we used a time series model to understand the trend of accidents, and ascertain the viability of applying ARIMA models on data...

Applying the Method of Small-shuffle Surrogate Data: Testing for Dynamics in fluctuating Data with Trends

Recently, a new surrogate method, the Small–Shuffle (SS) surrogate method, has been proposed to investigate whether there is some kind of dynamics in irregular fluctuations, even if they are modulated by long term trends or periodicities. This situation is theoretically incompatible with the assumption underlying previously proposed surrogate methods. We apply the SS surrogate method to a varie...

A Surrogate Method for Discrete Movement Data

Sample entropy can be an effective tool for the investigation of human movement variability. However, before applying the method, it can be beneficial to employ an analysis to confirm that observed data is not solely the result of stochastic processes. This can be achieved using surrogate methods. Previous investigations have used surrogate methods within human gait data, yet no appropriate met...
